Estimation of mean daily soil surface temperature on Tottori sand dune

Daily albedo, surface soil water content (at 9:00a.m.) and meteorological data were measured on a bare sand surface between August and November in 1997 and 1998 at Tottori sand dune, Japan. A simple model for estimation of the mean daily temperatureof soil surface using the routine meteorological data has been developed on bare sand surface. The model was constructed based on the heat balance. The soil heat flux (G) was considered as zero on 24-hr basis, the latent heat flux (LE) was calculated using the solar radiation, air temperature, and daily albedo instead of soil water content. The sensible heat flux (H), as the residual in heat balance, was used to estimate soil surface temperature. Results showed the high correlation (r=0.99) between measured and estimated surface temperatures, standard error of estimated temperature being 0.94 deg C. Since surface temperature is often used to estimate the soil evaporation, this model is very important for quantitative evaluation of water balance in arid and semi-arid regions in the absence of surface temperature data.
