Review: Co-workers' support and job performance among nurses in Jordanian hospitals

In trying to describe the findings of this paper succinctly, I was reminded of an aphorism used by Professor Tony Butterworth to describe the implications of the nursing stress research. He commented that 'happy nurse equals happy patient'. What would we say about this paper? 'A supported nurse is a better performing nurse'?The authors have completed a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 359 Jordanian staff nurses. The nurses were all asked to complete the Schwirian Six Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance, a modified version of the McCain and Marklin Social Integration Scale and a short demographic questionnaire. They found that perceived social support correlated 0.40 with the total score on the job performance scale. They conclude that social support enhances job performance. Or does it? In fact, a regression analysis showed that only 13% of the variance in job performance could be accounted for by perceived social support. Other factors are clearly at work.
