Review: White British researchers and internationally educated research participants: Insights from reflective practices on issues of language and culture in nursing contexts

This paper provides insight into methodological issues that occur in cross-cultural research. Reflexivity is an important strategy to use when conducting qualitative studies, particularly one in which the researchers and study participants are from different racial and ethnic backgrounds.The authors, who were white British researchers, conducted a qualitative study (focus groups) to explore the experiences of internationally educated nurses working as healthcare assistants in the NHS as part of a programme to increase pathways to UK registration. They provide an example of how they used reflexive practice in order to appraise critically the qualitative data that they gathered in order to curtail bias and misinterpretation. The two researchers presented their reflective discussions as they worked through the tensions that arose during their analysis. Their goal was to enhance the accuracy of the research and the credibility of their findings by engaging themselves consciously and deliberately to think about how their own experiences and values may have impacted their interpretations.
