With the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, many will reflect on the events of that campaign and the medical fraternity will be no different. While much focus will be on the actions of organisations such as Field Hospitals and Ambulance units and medical advances in general, the stories of individuals also provide much food for thought. This article describes the story of an individual, a predecessor of the author at Batley Grammar School in Yorkshire, which will sadly not be uncommon (Figure 1).
