Identification of fertility restorationfacilitates the development in a hybrid-breeding program involving cytaplasmic male sterility (CMS) system. Therefore, an investigation was taken up to study the effect of G. harknessii cytoplasm on yield and fibre quality traits, which is the best-known sterile cytoplasrrdc source so far used commercially in cotton. Nine cytoplasmic- genie male sterile (CGMS) lines namely LRA 5166, CSH 19, RB281, Pusa31,LH 1134, F505, F1183, SH2379 and K3400-7, carrying G. harknessii cytoplasm, were crossed to seven G hirsutum male parents selectedfrom the germplasm lines in a line x tester fashion. Based on the seedfertility restoring ability 63 crosses were taken up for studying the effect of G. harknessii cytoplasm on seedcotton yield and fibre quality traits of hybrids. Results of the study showed that sterile cytoplasm has some detrimental effect on yield traits in hybrid cotton. However, five hybrids F 1183xCIR 23, CSH 19xCIR 10, CSH 19xCIR 32,RB 281 x CIR 38 and RB 281 x CIR 32 showed significant superiority for seed cotton yield over the high yielding conventional check hybrid LHH 144.. Similarly six cross combinations viz, LH1134xCIR8, F505xCIR 10, Pusa31 x CIR23, CSH 19x CIR 26, Pusa 31 x CIR 26, and K 3400-7 x CIR 32 recorded superior fibre properties especially fibre strength and Micronaire value over LHH 144. The above mentioned combinations may be used for development of strong restorers, which have the potential for high general combining ability for almostall the characters including yield.
