Fuel gauges are inevitable units in any automobile and the present work is to modify the existing system of electrical transduction by a highly sensitive and safe method of transduction viz. the fiber optic counter part which has several added advantages over the electrical ones. Novel fiber optic fuel gauge is meant to get an idea about the measure of the fuel level in a vehicle; this scheme mainly makes use of an intensity modulated multimode fiber to sense the level of fuel in the tank. Ordinarily available sources and detectors were employed for the development of this sensor; a multimode step index plastic fiber entrenched in an aluminum support was used as the sensor head.
