摘要

Using optical fibers for sensing and measurement has been widely recognized, in addition to their pragmatic usage in signal transmission media for communication purpose. In this paper, a low cost, 650 nm diode laser based experimental set up is used to obtain the speckle pattern from standard glass fibers. The pattern is analyzed by capturing the speckle image through a low cost USB camera fitted to an optical microscope. As a test case, the arrangement is used to analyze the difference in the speckle pattern in the case of single and multi mode fibers, by identifying the features using a computer program. A simple algorithm is implemented in MATLAB to identify the characteristics of the speckle image.
