The future of the textbook as we know it is in doubt. Wikipedia has evolved over the past decade. I remember complaining when a writer used Wikipedia as a citation, back when I was involved in vituperative late-night online fights on the site over such things as the definition of psychiatry. Wikipedia used to be embarrassing attribution at the end of an article; it is now a useful and credible tool. Another example is the free online text from the International Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists and Association Professions, on whose site I have published a co-authored chapter. Knowledge is being shuttled into the virtual world, where it is collaborative, linked, multimedia, and transnational.
