In January 2009, the surgical world lost a great light when David Coston Sabiston Jr peacefully died at the age of 84 after a long illness. Having recovered significantly from a severe stroke in 1997, he was struck down again 4 years later in an episode that brought to a public end one of the most distinguished careers in modern surgical history.
