The year 2010 marks the centenary of Medical Education in the United States and Canada, Bulletin Number 4 of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching [1], better known as the Flexner report after its author, Abraham Flexner. In preparing his report, Flexner visited every single medical school in the United States and Canada. Of the 155 schools then in existence, Flexner called for the closing of 120, on the grounds that they had lax admission standards, lacked adequate facilities, failed to provide training in the fundamentals of modern medicine, and operated more in the financial interests of their owners than with regard to the educational needs of students or the health care requirements of society.
