The academy's governance and practice: restructuring for the challenges of the turn of the 21st Century.

AT THE INAUGURAL MEETING of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in October 1917 in Cleveland, OH, Lulu C. Graves, the Academy's first president, remarked that “The future of dietetics is assured. It is the privilege of those of us who are now in the work to conduct it along such lines that in the not very distant future, it will be a recognized part of the medical profession.”1 An untold number of practitioners and volunteer leaders have worked tirelessly over the near-century since to make sure Graves' forecast proved true and that dietetics practitioners would attain a recognized and respected role in health care. Activities surrounding the governance and practice functions of the profession have played an important role in making this happen.
