Object-oriented modeling framework for integration of computer applications in structural engineering

Computer applications in different areas of structural engineering such as analysis, design, construction and project management are mostly written in procedure-oriented languages and they are presently fragmented in nature. It is well-recognised that use of integrated computer applications would lead to saving in time and cost in design and construction of structures and infrastructural facilities. Vigorous efforts are being made world-wide to develop methodologies for integration by making use of latest developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) such as object-oriented modeling, information/data exchange standards, integrated data bases, 3-D/4-D modeling, virtual reality, network and world-wide web. Object-oriented modeling is being used in all these technologies to facilitate integration and extensibility. The paper presents an object-oriented framework for integrating legacy computer applications in structural engineering. Details of an object-oriented model for integrating legacy computer applications of analysis and design of RC frames are presented by using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the Case Tool: Rational Rose. Working of the OO model has been demonstrated with an example of implementation of integration of legacy structural analysis and design programs for design of an RC frame.
