Dimensional inspection is one of most critical procedures during the manufacturing process for controlling the quality of products. As the geometric dimensions of a product change, the mechanical properties of the product, such as moment of inertia, stiffness and mass distribution, are affected. Consequently, the resonant frequencies of the structure are altered because the mechanical properties change. Therefore, the shift in the resonant frequencies provides a potential valuable method of inspecting the dimensional conformance of a product. An in-depth study of the use of the acoustic spectrum for dimensional conformance applications was employed. Both experimental testing and analytical analysis were performed to evaluate the relationship between dimensional deviations and the consequent resonant frequency shifts of several simple but typical geometrical parts. It was found that the technology works well in certain conditions, and with limitations in other conditions. The potentials as well as the limitations of this technology are presented in this paper through a comparative study of the predicted and measured shifts of natural frequencies due to dimensional deviations of cylinders and flat plates.
