VARIOUS FACETS OF POLLEN AND ANTHER CULTURE

Haploids are plants produced from the gametic cells usually through in vitro techniques where either the microspores or megaspores are cultured on synthetic media. Haploid are unique in possessing a single copy or chromosomes due to which all genes whether recessive or dominant are expressed They provide an efficient system for mutational research as the changes are expressed immediately. Inspite of the manifold uses of haploids, their successful application in plant breeding has not been achieved, mainly due to the problems faced in raising them. The percentage of haploids produced is very low which does not offer, an optimum range for selection purposes. Several pretreatments have been tried in different modifications of culture medium to improvethe frequency as well as the regeneration ability of haploids. These various aspects have been discussed.
