Mango (Mongifera indica L.) pollen preservation is advantageous for maintaining breeder's stocks in pollen cryobanks. Pollen of elite mango clones provide a source for intraclonal genetic variability. Fertile 'Alphonso' anthers excised from freshly opened flowers were cryopreserved for two to five and half years. Pollination with cryopreserved pollen on emasculated. 'Alphonso' and 'Banganapalli' flowers resulted in fruit set. Parallel pollinations with fresh 'Alphonso' pollen over both these cultivars resulted in fruit set, although only few fruits could be recovered and none in some crosses. All the fruits set produced seeds (stones) which did not show any apparent differences when compared with those set with fresh pollen. Conservation and exchange of haploid clonal germplasm in the form of pollen can to a certain extent alleviate eco-geographic crossability barriers, facilitate crosses between asynchronously flowering clones and protract the time required for breeding new cultivars. The resultsobtained with crosses using cryopreserved pollen for four years (four main seasons) are presented, and the possible role of conserved clonal nuclear genetic diversity in mango breeding is discussed.
