摘要

India has an ancient heritage of traditional medicine. Ayurveda is accepted to be the oldest treatise on medical system. The Ayurveda is said to be an upaveda (part) of Atharavaveda (1000 B.C.), an old sacred text of hindus. Ayurvedic literature is vast and enriched with profiles of plants and their medicinal uses. In a modern context, Ayurvedic formulations are prepared by indigenous plants and their products. These formulations are divided into three categories: solid (churna, vati, and gutica), semisolid (avlehas), and liquid (asava and aristha) dosage forms. Scientific evidence to prove the rationale of using these formulations in health care is essential to develop and to preserve the cultural heritage.
