One of the most common problems encountered in our daily practices is heel pain. From pediatric to adult pathology, a wide range of conditions affecting the heel is seen, including neurogenic, biomechanical, inflammatory, neoplastic, or traumatic conditions. Malposition or malformation of the calcaneus typically results in devastating foot and ankle compensatory deformities while significantly altering the gait cycle. In addition, fractures of the calcaneus often pose great challenges to treating surgeons and, unfortunately, all too often anatomic reductions do not always lead to successful functional outcomes. A significant amount still needs to be learned in regards to how various conditions, deformities, and fracture patterns of the calcaneus are treated and managed.
