Infrared transparent windows on aircraft and missiles can be subjected to rapid heating which can cause thermal shock failure. A commercially available device for simulating such thermal shock environments has been assessed and used in a study of a range of materials. The material ordering resulting from these experiments has been compared with that obtained by considering a thermal shock figure of merit. [References: 12]
