Competitor objects to Sporn cost-recovery plans

A FirstEnergy subsidiary is objecting to plans by an American Electric Power subsidiary to recover about $56 million in costs related to the premature retirement of a 450- MW coal unit at the Philip Sporn coal-fired plant at New Haven, West Virginia. AEP subsidiary Ohio Power retired the 50-year-old unit at the end of last year. Under a 2007 New Source Review consent decree under the Clean Air Act with the Department of Justice, AEP agreed to retire or repower Sporn Unit 5 by the end of 2013.
