LG&E, Kentucky Utilities eye shuttering three coal-fired power plants

Louisville Gas & Electric and Kentucky Utilities are considering retiring three coal-fired power plants representing 801 MW over the next several years - roughly 10% of their 8,000- MW capacity. The next plant the PPL Corp. subsidiaries construct likely will be fired with natural gas, not coal. For a company that relies on coal to generate about 97% of its electricity, that is a historic break with form.
