Ben Spears Awarded the Prestigious 'Coal Man of the Year'

A wards are plentiful around the Providence, Ky., office of Ben Spears, human resources director for Alliance Coal's 1,200-member Western Kentucky regional work force. On Sept. 8, the 35-year coal industry veteran received his newest and most prestigious award yet - Coal Man of the Year from the Kentucky Mining Institute. The award was presented at a banquet in Lexington attended by more than 800 people, including Gov. Ernie Fletcher, Spears was chosen by the institute's board of directors from among seven nominees.
