Grafting offers an innovative cultural practice that can be usedM manage soilborne disease pressure, achieve greater fruit yields and increate nutrient uptake efficiency. That's the findings of a collaborative research effort between the Horticultureand Plant Pathology Departments at North Carolina State University and funded by the Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF). Involved on the research team were Suzanne O'Connell, Gary Rivard, Mary Peet, Frank Louws and Stefan Hartmann. Hartmann is agrower and owner of Black River Organic Farm, Ivanhoe, N.C. In the past, he was forced to abandon his open-field fresh-market tomato production because of high disease pressure from bacterial wilt (caused by Ralstonia solanacearum}.
