Mont. bureau specifies details for coal lease of Otter Creek tracts

Montana state officials released bid details last week for 572.3 million short tons of coal being offered as part of a coal lease sale for the Otter Creek tracts outside of Ashland. The 14 tracts in Powder River County are being leased together, and the state has set a minimum bonus bid of $85.845 million or 15 cents/st. Bids must be approved by the state Board of Land Commissioners (PCT 2/17). The Montana Land Board lowered the minimum leasing price from 25 cents/st to 15 cents/st for the governmentowned coal being pursued by Arch Coal in the southern part of the state, a Department of Natural Resources employee said February 17.
