The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) has a significant effect during the manufacture of vitrified abrasive products. Thermal stress fracture occurs during the cooling phase of heat treatment if the coefficient of thermal expansion between the abra-sive grit and the bonding phase is not matched. Thermal stress fracture becomes more critical with vitrified diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasive products owing to their relatively high cost. The prediction of the coefficient of thermal expan-sion, without recourse to using experimental meth-ods, is of paramount importance.
