Turn-milling is a relatively newconcept in manufacturing technology, wherein both theworkpiece and the tool are given a rotary movementsimultaneously. This new technology opens up newranges of applications in the manufacturing processes.The objective of the present work is to investigate theprocess of orthogonal turn-milling for the machiningof rotationally symmetrical workpieces within thenormally available range of speeds and feeds(comparable to those used in turning) to explore itsadvantages. The emphasis has been laid mainly on thesurface-finish of the machined surface achieved and thechip length. The experiments have been conducted fororthogonal turn-milling of brass and mild-steelworkpieces using the planning of experimentaltechnique to study the surface-finish achieved. Theexperiments on turning have been conducted for boththe workpiece materials to make a comparative studyof the surface-finish and the chip geometry achieved incase of orthogonal turn-milling and turning.Experimental results show that in orthogonal turn-milling, the surface-finish of the machined surfaceimproves with increase in cutter speed and deteriorateswith increase in axial feed rate. The surface-finishachieved by orthogonal turn-milling is about 10 timeshigher than that achieved by turning. Also, the chipsproduced in orthogonal turn-milling are very small ascompared to the chips produced in turning. Hence,orthogonal turn-milling can be an alternative to turningwhere high surface-finish and easy chip disposal are desired.
