Endocrinology and art. A dwarf and some fried eggs. 'Velazquez dying behind the window on the left side out of which a spoon projects,' Salvador Dali--1982. (Dali Museum, Figueres, Spain).
Salvador Dali (Figueres, Cataluna, Spain 1904-1989), inspired by one of the greatest Baroque Spanish artists Diego Velazquez (1599-1660), realized the painting Velazquez Dying behind the Window on the Left Side out of which a Spoon Projects in 1982. This painting is a surrealistic interpretation of the very famous Velazquez's The Dwarf Sebastian de Morra (1645). It depicts a dwarf displaying fried eggs on head, shoulders.and hands. As shown by the large head size and the shortness of his limbs, the dwarf is a typical example of achondroplasia.
