Chronic mesenteric ischemia is a relatively rare condition, secondary mostly to severe atherosclerotic disease. Symptoms of mesenteric ischemia seldom occur unless all 3 mesenteric vessels are severely diseased. It is a condition that progresses over many years, and as a result, the mesenteric vessels are usually severely calcified, diffusely diseased, or many times completely occluded.
