Commentary: penetrating aortic ulcer of the abdominal aorta: an increasingly frequent finding.

The first case of penetrating aortic ulcer (PAU) in the thoracic aorta was described by Shen-nan1 in 1934 and the first successful treatment by Shumacker and King2 in 1959. Although PAU remained a rare and obscure pathology for many decades, multiple case reports and some case series have been published over the years. As the sophistication of imaging modalities has grown, so too have the number of PAUs being diagnosed worldwide, increasing our knowledge of the natural history of this lesion, which is now considered a distinct entity in the acute aortic syndrome.
