I appreciate Dr. Marich's passion and evident commitment to both science and practice. However, I believe her interpretation of my comments is based upon (a) taking them out of context and (b) a misunderstanding about my view of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) as a form of psychotherapy. Space Umitations only allow me to address in detail a few of her points. Therefore, regarding the therapeutic relationship, I refer readers back to the original interview, beginning with: "[The Adaptive Information Processing Model] offers a different way to view the therapeutic relationship, and utilize EMDR as part of the interactive process" (Luber and Shapiro, 2009, p. 228). As I have stated previously, "Clearly, a thorough understanding and application of EMDR methodology, along with a sensitive and individualized use of the therapeutic relationship, will make for the best EMDR treatment and produce the greatest therapeutic effects" (Shapiro, 2005, p. x).
