Well publicized controversies surrounding brain death generate disproportionate academic and media attention. This publication bias can distract attention from the reassuring realities around brain death determination that continue to make it one of the key conceptual advances in understanding human pathophysiology and the consequences of technological advances in physiologic support—and indeed in health care outcomes.
