Standing on the promises: first wave validation reports of the Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System.

This issue of the journal features three articles that form the core of the so-called first wave testing of the PROMIS initiative [1-3]. PROMIS, or "Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System" in full, is an initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health to create "a national resource for precise and efficient measurement of patient-reported symptoms, functioning, and health-related quality of life, appropriate for patients with a wide variety of chronic disease conditions" [1].
