Complications after surgery or nonoperative treatment for acute achilles tendon rupture.

Objective: To compare the rate of complications of minimally invasive surgery with nonoperative treatment with bracing and immediate weight bearing, for acute raptures of the Achilles tendon. Design: Randomized, controlled, non-blinded, 4-center trial, with participants followed for 1 year. Estimating a postsurgical rate of complications, excluding rerupture, of 34%, power was calculated to show a difference (1-sided a = 0.05) with a risk difference between interventions of 30%. Setting: The accident and emergency departments of 4 teaching hospitals in the Netherlands, between January 2004 and September 2005.
