Size Doesn't Matter!

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) has revolutionized the field of mediastinal lymph node sampling. Our gastroenterology colleagues have been using endoscopic ultrasound for quite some time, but recent (2001) miniaturization of this technology and incorporation into the bronchoscope have allowed pulmonologists to use real-time ultrasound to safely and efficiently sample mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided trans-bronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is now used to diagnose and stage malignant and benign diseases involving the mediastinum.
