In the paper, to get the reasonable biomass based alternative vehicle fuels, ethyl levulinate (EL) was taked as the key addition fuel, physical and chemical properties of fuel blends of EL-biodiesel-diesel were studied based on China National Standards and Codes: GB/T25199-2010 biodiesel fuel blend (B5). The physical and chemical properties of EL-biodiesel-diesel blends were investigated using test methods of standards and codes. The result shown that there was no phase separation in fuel blends at specific temperatures. Cold flow properties of fuel blends including cold filter plugging point and solidifying point was improved. Density and kinematic viscosity of fuel blends was in line with China National Standards and Codes, distillation and closed cup flash point of fuel blends was improved compared to diesel. Cetane index of fuel blends was in line with China National Standards and Codes. Copper corrosion of fuel blends except B5E0 was in line with China National Standards and Codes. Low heat value of fuel blends was suitable for diesel combustion. In summary, ethyl levulinate appears acceptable as a addition for diesel because of its good physical and chemical porperties.
