Theory as a Necessary Part of Applied Gerontology

In this issue, we present another invited contribution followed by commentaries. Jason Powell begins the conversation with an argument about theory and applied gerontology, suggesting that a Foucauldian approach to care and welfare issues in particular would be a fruitful path for at least some working in applied gerontology. Susan McDaniel, Judie Svihula, and Nick Castle respond in different ways to Dr. Powell's article. McDaniel strongly supports Powell's thesis, and Svihula supports the argument's gist but raises specific concerns about a Foucauldian theoretical orientation. Castle responds with even greater doubt about the relevance of Powell's position for research and practice. For fairness sake, Powell is allowed to reply to the commentators to conclude this phase of the conversation. I sincerely hope this is not the end of applied gerontology's engagement with social theory because I see a great need for further debate and use of various theories by applied gerontologists.
