The effect of phytoestrogen, genistein, on the hormonal and metabolic status of pregnant rats.

The effects of 100 mg/kg dietary genistein on the serum insulin, leptin, glucagon, corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) concentrations and some carbohydrate and lipid parameters in 63 pregnant female rats were investigated. It was shown that compared to the control group, the group fed diets with genistein had decreased serum leptin concentrations on day 18 of pregnancy and decreased ACTH on the first day after parturition. Insulin; glucagon and corticosterone; serum glucose, triglycerides, free fatty acid and cholesterol and liver and skeletal muscle glycogen, triglycerides and cholesterol concentrations were not affected by genistein.
