The global middle class is expanding as never before. Rising incomes in China and India dominate the trend, but 20 million individuals join the middle class each year outside those countries, the fastest rate in 30 years.2 The phenomenon extends to the least-developed areas: of the 20 economies the International Monetary Fund projects to grow most rapidly in 2011, 8 are in sub-Sahara Africa.
