In 2008, the Institute of Medi-cine (IOM) recommended that all physicians develop competency in geriatrics to help them provide good care for the growing population of older individuals in the United States. Now leaders from a variety of medical specialties have drafted a roadmap for providing such training.

The authors present, on behalf of Irish Society of Physicians in Geriatric Medicine, a position paper on changes that should be implemented to enhance the safety and quality of care for nursing home residents in Ireland.
