摘要

The effect of the surface topography of a roll on friction and wear when sliding against a steel sheet was determined by performing sliding friction and wear tests by sliding carbon steel rolls with surfaces roughened by shot blasting and carbon steel rolls with surfaces processed to a regular surface topography by etching against stainless steel sheets using a system for in-situ measurement of the 3-D topography of the sliding surface of rolls. It was established that in the case of shot blasted rolls with random surface irregularities, the height of irregularities reduced by wear and the coefficient of friction increased with an increase of the bearing area ratio and in the case of etched rolls with regular surface irregularities having flat crests, a change of the bearing area ratio by wear was not observed and the coefficient of friction was almost constant excluding the initial running-in stage.
