Machinery consists of many kinds of machine elements, and accidents originate from one element. They have various failure modes. Accordingly, in order to diagnose the machinery with high reliability, it is very important to analyze many kinds of detecting signals generated from it and moreover to establish compound diagnosis techniques considering all signals synthetically. The Research Group of Compound Sensing Techniques for Machinery Diagnosis has developed a new compound diagnosis system that simultaneously detects acoustic emission (AE) and vibration and provides diagnostic information as the first step in establishing a compound diagnostic technique. The system consists of a compound sensor, a measurement unit, and software. The compound sensor, made by an advanced sensor fusion technique, was able to detect a broadband signal by itself. The measurement unit received the signal from the sensor and separated it into an acoustic emission signal and a vibration signal. The measurement unit and the software processed the signals for diagnostic information. The performance of the system was evaluated in comparison with the results of the single measuring instruments of acoustic emission and vibration in a rolling fatigue test simulating a thrust ball bearing. The evaluation demonstrated that the developed compound diagnosis system had the equivalent diagnostic performance to each of the AE and vibration units.
