The Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) attracted thousands of allergist/immunologists, healthcare professionals and others to its wide range of symposia, oral abstracts, poster sessions and advanced practice sessions. Topics covered included the sensitization and tolerance in allergic diseases, immunotherapy, food allergy and gastrointestinal disease, asthma, skin disease, practice management, new technologies and healthcare reform. New data were revealed for the treatment of asthma and allergic diseases, including biological therapies and immunotherapy. Also, primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDDs) are commonly treated with replacement IgG, in order to reduce the incidence of serious infections. Treatments are typically administered either subcutaneously or intravenously, with the former becoming more common due to the superior safety and maintenance of steady-state IgG levels and the flexible dosing regimen. The role of the microbiome in health and disease was featured in the keynote lecture, while the Presidential Plenary focused on the role of genetics and environment in allergy and the topic of tolerance.
