A UK manufacturer that specialises in producing tablet-counting machines for the pharmaceutical industry, is using ring and slide systems to ensure that its machines perform accurately. Pharma Packaging Systems, located in Pershore, Worcestershire, specialises in designing and manufacturing machines for counting tablets and capsules in the pharmaceuticals industry. The company, formed in 2002, has grown into a £2.5m-tumover, 14-employee organisation with customers around the world. Exports account for 85% of its sales. The company has recently become ISO9001 and has relocated to its new 15,000ft~2 (1,400m~2) premises. Its equipment complies with the latest cGMP requirements and is validated, including 21CFR Part 11 compliance (where applicable). One of the company's recent projects was to design and build a counting machine with tare gross weighing system, designed to handle substitute narcotic tablets for a customer in the US. "A tablet counter is the heart of any solid dose packaging line," explains Pharma Packaging Systems' technical director, Ian Barnes. "The system had to be quick, hence the configuration allows three containers to be filled with tablets to be [counted], weighed and checked simultaneously. However, the overriding priority is accuracy, as we are dealing with a very important pharmaceutical application."
