In the paint manufacturing process, one of the most important steps is the dispersion of pigments therefore a new range of organic pigments: the "Easily Dispersible pigments" called "ED pigments" has been developed to simplify this process. As the name suggests, ED pigments can be easily incorporated into paint systems with a dissolver and without an additional "bead milling" step. This is an innovative approach for paint manufacturing which offers process optimization, process flexibility, cost efficiency as well as savings in raw materials and energy. To achieve "Easily Dispersible" characteristics of organic pigments, an economic production process which includes surface treatment of the pigments with highly efficient and widely compatible dispersing additives has been developed. Theses additives adsorbed on the pigment surfaces facilitate separation and wetting of pigment particles during the dispersion process. Optimum amount of additive is present on each ED pigment surface to achieve the necessary dispersion properties, thus reducing or eliminating the need for additional dispersant in the mill base formulation and reducing the dispersion time of the pigment. The range includes three different product types: EDS pigments for solvent-based industrial coating systems, EDU pigments for water- and solvent-based industrial coating systems and EDW pigments for water based pigment dispersions for decorative paints.
