Approaching data management from the bottom up

At the ITF (Industry Technology Facilitator) event in Aberdeen on March 5th, a showcase for new technology. Craig May, president and managing director of Chevron Upstream Europe, said: "Acquiring data is pretty cheap. But managing it effectively, gleaning insights and getting insights to decision makers, that's a theme through a lot of technology you'll hear about today." But I spent the day looking for interesting developments in how companies use data. I heard a lot about how to get new technology moving, and saw a lot of sensor technologies to acquire data, but hardly anything to do better with data management. You can see my report on this issue and decide for yourself. In this issue we also have an article written by Houston consultant Dutch Holland, and Chevron veteran Jim Crompton, talking about how the industry needs to get better at managing data, not just acquiring it (by the way, Dutch and Jim have written an excellent book about how to do this, called 'The Future Belongs to the Digital Engineer').
