Injuries of the extremities are common in an emergency medical service. The emergency physician is faced with fractured bones and dislocated joints. Penetrating injuries of extremities are less common.The pattern of injury determines the tactical approach of the medical treatment. In a multiple traumatized patient an acute life-threatening condition has to be resolved first. Then the handling of the injured limb can be carried out.
