The psychiatric emergency states one of the most common causes of emergency calls in the emergency physician's every day life. In case of an emergency, ideally, contacting the patient and introducing oneself as a physician is followed by making an offer for medical attendance, which is generally accepted by the patient. By communicating with mentally disordered persons, this procedure frequently failes. In case of both need for a given treatment and simultaneous rejection of the treatment by the patient, the emergency physician has to decide to which extent he is able and allowed to help. For this purpose, juridical and psychiatric knowledge is in demand. The following article provides an overview.
