Alzheimer's dementia - Diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions

More than 1 million people in Germany suffer from Alzheimer's dementia. The prevalence increases from 5% at age 75 to 40% at age 90. The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in the middle stage of dementia is possible with a limited number of clinical investigations. New biomarkers allow a high diagnostic certainty already in early disease stages. In-patient treatment is often preceded by delirium or falls in dementia. Anticholinergic medication should be omitted in these patients. Day care clinics and the involvement of caregiver may help in the hospital treatment for patients with dementia.
