Diesel-electric Propulsion Increases Market Share: propulsion systems find niche in smaller markets of platform supply vessels and double-ended ferries where maneuverability is key

For the 2004-2005 reporting year, the Marine Propulsion Order Survey (see D>W November 2005) shows a significant increase in sales of engines for diesel-electric drives, with the total engine power output now within 4% of the 2000-2001 levels, when the market for large podded drives last peaked. And, although not at their highest proportion of the total market in the last five years -the market for mechanical systems continues to boom - at 38% of the proportion of diesel electric drives being installed in vessels, it has improved significantly over last year's 2.4%.
