The basic map for stormwater management in Dortmund. An instrument for the systematical use of existing data and for the integration of ecological stormwater management into the planning process

Based on the results of two interdisciplinary research projects a basic map of ecological stormwater management has been worked out for the city of Dortmund. The map's task is to make an early integration of stormwater management into urban planning possible. This is of great importance for getting the optimum in coordination of hydrological, ecological and economical demands in realizing para 51 a of the Water Law of NRW. The map takes all data relevant for an environmental stormwater management into target consideration. They are part of the environment information system (ARC-Info) of the City's Environment Bureau and they are available in high density for the whole urban area. Essential data that have been worked in are soil permeability (kf-factor), groundwater field distance, incline situation and potential contaminated areas. Therefore the map serves as an in-advance-information and -orientation for setting up zoning plans. In single cases it may even replace a single expert opinion. Moreover data become evaluated so that first recommendations for dimensioning and way of stormwater management can be given.
