By means of molecular genetic methods point mutations can be detected in the genome of an animal. These loci described as SNPs are distributed over the complete genome and permit a high information density. SNPs in encoding regions, i. e. areas in which e. g. the important proteins are encoded genetically are causing genetic variability. Performance prediction of important traits, e. g. milk yield, milk protein content is already possible in the calf by molecular genetic analysis of its individual genotype.
